Raven is the daughter Monique Darkholme, a homeless prostitute who sought shelter in a Catholic convent just days before giving birth to Raven. When the sisters devout delivered Raven, they screamed, and laid accusations against the mutant babe, claiming she was a demon. When the priests caught wind of Raven’s appearance, they ordered the baby’s subtle execution. One sister devout by the name of Sister Maria would foil the execution plans, casting off her solemn vows in a private letter to God. Sister Maria burned the letter on her bed to create the distraction, while she escaped with the newborn Raven.
Raven was raised in a shelter in London for the first five years of her life. She loved Sister Maria, and was grateful for the love returned. Sister Maria died abruptly from an illness, and the young Raven fled the shelter to the streets. It was in this emotion that she stood before a puddle on an empty London street and viewed her own transformation into Sister Maria. Raven would spend the immediate years that followed traveling the world under various identities until a chance encounter with Charles Xavier. Xavier was a late teen, just ten years older than Raven. Raven was posing as his mother as he stumbled into the kitchen as she raided the fridge. She tried to pass as his mother, but her sloppy casing led to an inaccurate portrayal of Charle’s mother. He broke the news to Raven by way of telepathic communication, and asked her to reveal her true form.
Xavier took Raven on as his adopted sister. His parents were not actively involved in his life, so they hardly took notice. Her life changed as it needed to in order to justify her existence. To some she was Raven, Xavier’s sister. To others, she was his cousin. To others, she was a friend. And in some cases, she was not Raven at all. Raven was there when Charles, Erik and Moira met, and she continues to follow around Charles in her ‘more appropriate form’ like a stray puppy. Raven is in her late teens, and is a student at Xavier’s School.
